SHOW ME TELL ME SAMPLE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

When taking your driving test you must show the examiner that you can carry out routine maintenance checks. The 'show me, tell me' questions require you to explain to the examiner how to find and check the tyres, brakes, fluid levels, lights, direction indicators and horn

You will be asked two questions, one 'show me' and one 'tell me' question

A sample of the questions and answers are listed below

Instruction and advice will be given by your DSA approved driving instructor about all the relevant topics during your driving lessons.

Q1: Open the bonnet, tell me how you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil

A: Identify dipstick/, describe how to check oil level against the minimum/maximum markers

Q2: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level

A: Identify the coolant reservoir/bottle, minimum and maximum level markings and describe how to top up to the correct level

Q3: Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir/bottle is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level

A: Identify windscreen washer reservoir/bottle and explain how to check level.

Q4: Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid

A: Identify reservoir, check level against high/low markings

Q5: Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car

A: Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc, or ask someone to help

Q6: Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey

A: Brakes should be tested as you set off and should not feel spongy or slack and the vehicle should not pull to one side

Q7: Tell me where you can find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked

A,Refer to the vehicle handbook . use a reliable pressure gauge, attach to the tyre valve ,check pressures when tyres are cold

Q8: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe

A, Make sure there are no cuts and/or bulges and ensure there is a minimum 1.6mm of tread depth across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference

Q9: Show me/explain how you would check that the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey

A: Start engine and apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel, this should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.If the system wasnt working properly the steering would feel very heavy and difficult to operate

Q10: Show me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working without starting the engine up

A: Turn ignition on walk round the vehicle and check all the lights are working properly

Q11: Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working

A: switch on the hazard warning switch then walk round the vehicle to check functioning of all indicators

Q12: Show me how you would check that the horn is working

A: Sound the horn

Q13: Show me how you would check the hand brake for excessive wear

A: Demonstrate by applying hand brake that when it is fully applied it secures itself and the vehicle. If the Handbrake cable was worn it wouldnt hold the vehicle and the the lever would travel up too far.
